Bitcoin Price Jumps as Cryptocurrency Traders Become Wary of Tether ‘Stablecoin’
October 15, 2018 12:00 pm|Comments (0)

Bitcoin’s value jumped by almost 9% at one point on Monday, as investors fled the so-called stablecoin Tether.

Tether tokens are supposed to be tied to the U.S. dollar, with the eponymous company behind them claiming that it has a dollar in its accounts for each token it issues. There is no conclusive evidence to support this claim, but the token is still often used as a dollar substitute for trading purposes, as they are more easily transferred between exchanges than dollars are.

Some have long suspected that the Tether operation is being used to buy a load of Bitcoins for nothing, effectively propping up the value of Bitcoin. It so happens that Tether and a major cryptocurrency exchange called Bitfinex share the same CEO, and Tether sends all its freshly minted tokens to Bitfinex. When they get there, the price of Bitcoin tends to go up, suggesting Tether tokens are being used to buy Bitcoins.

On Monday, the value of the Tether token, which had been worth around 99 cents, suddenly plunged as low as 93 cents before recovering to around 97 cents. At the same time, Bitcoin’s price shot up by 8.9% to $ 6,769 before settling down to around $ 6,640 at the time of writing—still up 5.2% over the preceding day.

According to Bloomberg, the reason for Tether’s pull away from the $ 1 mark lay in renewed rumors around Bitfinex’s financial health.

Bitfinex said in a Monday Medium post that its customers were still able to withdraw cryptocurrencies and fiat-currency holdings “without the slightest interference,” although “fiat deposits have been temporarily paused for certain user groups” pending the implementation of a new deposit system Tuesday. This missive appears to have been what staunched the selloff.

Bitcoin wasn’t the only winner from the Tether upset. Alternative “stablecoins” such as Gemini Dollar and TrueUSD are also up, as traders pulled back from Tether.

Nikesh Arora to Become CEO of Palo Alto Networks: ‘I Really Wanted to Be an Operator’
June 2, 2018 6:00 am|Comments (0)

Nikesh Arora, a Silicon Valley fixture who helped build Google and then did a brief and tumultuous stint as president of Masayoshi Son’s Softbank, has finally landed his CEO job. Arora will become head of Palo Alto Networks on June 6, replacing Mark McLaughlin.

Arora told Fortune in an interview Friday that after the SoftBank experience, “I went through the process of thinking about what I would do next, and I really wanted to be an operator. I wanted it to be at a growth company in a growth business… And I wanted to make sure it was the right company with the right team. The more time I spent with Mark and the team [at Palo Alto Networks], the more I got excited. It’s a great culture, a fast growth company, and the opportunity is to continue to work with the team and scale and expand.”

Arora has no direct experience in cybersecurity. But Palo Alto Networks has been thriving recently, with nearly $ 2 billion in revenue last year, and a 90% surge in its stock price. While it is an increasingly competitive business, “They have been winning against all the players in the marketplace,” Arora said.

McLaughlin will remain at the company as vice chairman. He said he wanted to step down as CEO in part to spend more time with his family, which includes two adult daughters and an eight-year-old son. McLaughlin will have an operational role as an advocate for customers and an interface with government. He added that he will continue his work with the federal government on a cybersecurity “moonshot.”

“You’ll be hearing more about that this summer,” McLaughlin said.

While at SoftBank in 2015, Arora paid a visit to Fortune’s annual Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen. Watch his interview with executive editor Adam Lashinsky here.

This game that’s like SimCity for making your own MMO RPG needs to become reality

What do you get if you cross SimCity with Minecraft? Well, MYMMO, probably. This game, which is being single-handedly built by Aaron John-Baptiste, a Web developer in London, needs to exist.

The game lets you design the world of your massively-multiplayer role-playing game, then fill it with AI-controlled characters who will complete quests, improve their equipment and take each other on automatically.

You get to design the actual layout of the world, then place things that you’d expect in an MMO, like shops, inns, markets and arenas for players to use. You’re also able to design things like quests, monsters, fighting areas and balance the difficulty on your own.

Once it’s ready, you can throw the switch and do the simulation of your MMO in action.

John-Baptiste has kept a development log and occasionally streams the under-development game on Twitch, so that others can see what he’s working on.

In the development log, he says that “terraforming in old SimCitys was one of the most exciting parts of creating your city and everyone knows how fun it can be in games like Minecraft.”

MYMMO is built using Unity and John-Baptiste has hinted in the past that he hopes to release the game widely as an alpha for anyone to play in the Spring, but he holds a day job so it’s only worked on during nights and weekends.

Perhaps what’s coolest about MYMMO is that it’s being built in public, on Twitch, YouTube and Twitter – even if it’s somewhat unintentional.

Streaming under-development games that are side projects is fascinating, because you get an insight into how someone actually goes about building something like this.

I wouldn’t know the first place to start on a game, let alone designing graphics like those in MYMMO, but it shows just what can be done with your spare time.
