Justin Trudeau Sends an HQ2 Love Letter to Amazon
October 20, 2017 12:02 am|Comments (0)

No tax breaks, but Canada offers a valuable perk: Universal healthcare.

Canadian cities are going all out to woo Amazon’s second headquarters, including a “Dear Jeff” letter from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the company’s CEO Jeff Bezos.

In his letter, which comes on the final day of a competition for cities to make their case to Amazon, Trudeau reminds Bezos that “it is in one other that Canada and the United States have found their closest friend and ally.”

If that’s not enough to tell Bezos where Amazon’s loyalties should lie, Trudeau adds “[W]e enjoy the longest, most peaceful and mutually beneficial relationship of any two countries in the world.”

The Prime Minister did not, however, specify exactly where in Canada that Amazon should set up shop, though most of the country’s major cities—including Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary—have put their hat in the ring.

Amazon set off a frenzy among city governments this summer when it announced it was seeking to open a second headquarters outside of Seattle, and could create as many as 50,000 high paying jobs in coming years.

As the competition came to a close on Thursday for cities to make their case, one research firm cited Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, New York, and Washington D.C.—but not one of the Canadian ones—as the leading candidates.

Nonetheless, Trudeau’s letter makes some strong economic arguments, along with the sentimental ones, for Amazon to make its second home north of the border.

“Canadians enjoy a universal health care system and a robust public pension plan which help support our excellent quality of life and lower costs for employers,” he states, while also talking up the country’s universities and policies to attract high-skilled immigrants.

Trudeau’s letter also appeared to include a subtle swipe at the nativist policies of the Trump Administration:

“As the first country in the world to adopt a policy of multiculturalism, we have shown time and again that a country can be stronger not in spite of its differences but because of them. Diversity is a fact but inclusion is a choice.”

One other notable feature of the Canadian cities’ pitch is they don’t offer tax breaks, which have been a controversial feature of the bids of a number of U.S. cities. Instead, the suitors have Canadian have emphasized the savings Amazon would incur from Canada’s public health system.

Justin Bieber Takes A Few Punches For Complex
February 1, 2017 3:25 am|Comments (0)

‘I feel like it’s my responsibility to be the greatest I can be,’ he says in the magazine’s April/May issue.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P><a href=”http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml”>Justin Bieber</a> appears bloodied and beat up on the cover of <a href=”http://www.complex.com/music/2012/03/justin-bieber-cover-story/page/1″ target=”_blank”><i>Complex</i></a> magazine, and it’s a far cry from the Biebs’ well-groomed image. </P><P> </P><P>Inside the April/May issue, the 18-year-old opens up about his childhood and his very public relationship with girlfriend Selena Gomez. He also discusses his upcoming <a href=”/news/articles/1680373/justin-bieber-believe-album.jhtml”>album, <i>Believe,</i></a> pledging that it’s “go big or go home” once it drops later this year. </P><P> </P><P>”I feel like it’s my responsibility to be the greatest I can be,” the magazine cover boy says. “If I start making terrible music, I don’t expect people to like me. If I’m making great music and there’s no reason for people to dislike me, that’s when it’s going to make me upset. People just need to take a chance and listen. If they don’t want to take a chance, then I don’t know. That’s going to be the biggest problem: to make them feel like it’s cool for them to like my music.” </P><P> </P><P>Bieber hopes the new album will show his growth. It will include a number of collaborators, including Mike Posner, who produced <a href=”/news/articles/1680882/justin-bieber-boyfriend-single-buzz.jhtml”>lead single “Boyfriend,”</a> set for release on March 26. </P><P> </P><P><center><embed src=’http://cdn.complexmedianetwork.com/cdn/agenda.complex.com/js/playerL.swf’ height=’340′ width=’576′ bgcolor=’0x111111′ allowscriptaccess=’always’ allowfullscreen=’true’ flashvars=”&backcolor=0x111111&bandwidth=1&file=mp4%3ABIEBER_RE_EDITED_FINAL.mp4&frontcolor=0xcccccc&gapro.accountid=UA-30251-57&gapro.height=316&gapro.pluginmode=FLASH&gapro.trackpercentage=true&gapro.trackstarts=true&gapro.tracktime=true&gapro.visible=true&gapro.width=576&gapro.x=0&gapro.y=0&googima.ad=undefined&googima.ad.position=pre&googima.ad.tag=http%3A%2F%2Fad.doubleclick.net%2Fpfadx%2Fcmn_complex%2Fmusic_channels%3Bkw%3Ds_mus%2Cto%2Ct2%2Cinternal%2Centry%2Cugc%3B!c%3Dugc%3Bsz%3D640x360%3Btile%3D4&googima.allowvolumeslider=true&googima.height=316&googima.pluginmode=HYBRID&googima.position=over&googima.visible=true&googima.width=576&googima.x=0&googima.y=0&hd.file=mp4%3ABIEBER_RE_EDITED_FINAL.mp4&hd.pluginmode=HYBRID&hd.state=false&image=http%3A%2F%2Fcdnl.complex.com%2Fassets%2FCHANNEL_IMAGES%2Fvideo_player_preview_images%2FBIEBER_VIDEO_THUMB.jpg&lightcolor=0x3366cc&plugins=http%3A%2F%2Flp.longtailvideo.com%2F5%2Fhd%2Fhd.swf%2Cgapro-1h%2Cviral-2h%2Chttp%3A%2F%2Flp.longtailvideo.com%2F5%2Fgoogima%2Fgoogima.swf&streamer=rtmp%3A%2F%2Fflash.edgecastcdn.net%2F0002DA%2F2012Q1%2F&viral.onpause=false&viral.pluginmode=FLASH”/></center> </P><P> </P><P>”I just rap for fun; it’s nothing to take seriously,” he admits. “On my new album, I’m going to do a little bit of rapping,” he adds before giving a preview of a few lines from “Boyfriend.” “Tell me what you like, dear/ Tell me what you don’t/ I could be your Buzz Lightyear/ Fly across the globe/ You don’t even need to fight, dear/ You already know/ I can make you shine bright/ Like you’re laying in the snow, burr,” he raps. </P><P> </P><P>The superstar also goes into detail about his work ethic, saying that he sets the bar high for himself. “When I release something, I want it to be the best,” he says. “When I release my fragrance, I want it to be the #1 fragrance &#8212; I don’t want it to be the ninth-best-selling fragrance. My Christmas album went double-platinum worldwide. Christmas albums don’t do that, and that still wasn’t good enough for me.” </P><P> </P><P><i>What do you think of Justin’s new magazine cover? Justin Bieber’s ‘Boyfriend’ Teaser Goes Hard
March 6, 2016 3:25 am|Comments (0)

The 13-second preview of Mike Posner-produced track shows off an edgier side of Bieber.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>Is it killing you that you have to wait until Monday to hear what <a href=”/news/articles/1680882/justin-bieber-boyfriend-single-buzz.jhtml”>”Boyfriend” sounds</a> like? Well, <a href=”http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml”>Justin Bieber</a> feels your pain and decided to release a teaser for the lead single off his <a href=”/news/articles/1680373/justin-bieber-believe-album.jhtml”>album, <i>Believe.</i></a> </P><P> </P><P>The 13-second, blink-and-you-might-miss-it tease is spare in terms of instruments, just bleeps and thumps, no singing or rapping. But it does play up Bieber’s love for hip-hop; as it nears the end of the tease, a drum line-style beat kicks in. Come Monday, of course, the whole song will drop for Beliebers’ listening pleasure. </P><P> </P><P><center><embed src=”http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:744691/cp~id%3D1680192%26vid%3D744688%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A744688″ width=”460″ height=”260″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowFullScreen=”true” allowScriptAccess=”always” base=”.”></embed></center> </P><P> </P><P>The video teaser also includes footage of Bieber in the studio, recording “Boyfriend,” which was co-written and co-produced by Mike Posner. The clip premiered on Justin’s <a href=”http://www.justinbiebermusic.com/boyfriend” target=”_blank”>website</a> late Thursday night. </P><P> </P><P>”This record is different in a very good way,” said producer/writer Mason Levy, who also worked on the song. “Definitely edgier, it’s more grown-up, it’s more developed and it’s sexier. It’s just like really dope. It’s gonna definitely surprise people. People aren’t really expecting that. They’re going to like it.” </P><P> </P><P>It’s clear from the teaser that <a href=”/news/articles/1681595/justin-bieber-boyfriend.jhtml”>Bieber is using</a> influences from urban music and that he’s looking to grow up sonically. The music in the new clip also seems to pay homage to Justin Timberlake, and even Chris Brown. Bieber has confirmed that he raps on the song. </P><P> </P><P>”It’s more just the verses [that he’s rapping on], and the rest he’s singing,” Levy told MTV News. “It’s dope. It’s hip-hop, but with great acoustic R&B, pop guitar with very hip-hop, clubby drums and really dope Justin Timberlake-y melodies.” </P><P> </P><P><i>What do you think of “Boyfriend” so far? Tell us in the comments!</i></p>
