Microsoft’s budget Windows VR headsets roll out to developers soon

A lucky few developers will be able to get their hands on a low-cost Windows virtual reality headset starting this month. Microsoft announced Wednesday that the Acer Mixed Reality Developer Edition headset will start rolling out to a handpicked batch of software makers starting the end of March, with more coming later.

This marks the first release of a Windows Mixed Reality headset, which Microsoft first previewed last year. The headsets are supposed to stand out from the crowd because of a lower price and their support for “inside-out” tracking that uses sensors on the device to determine a user’s position, rather than relying on external trackers to gather that information. That’s why Microsoft is calling them mixed reality headsets.

Azure Stack preview reveals Microsoft’s hybrid cloud vision

Azure Stack, Microsoft’s private cloud software built from the same bits used to create the public Azure cloud service, is now available in its third, and likely final, technical preview edition before being released to the public later this year.

TP3 has many new features, but it also clarifies Azure Stack’s pricing structure, and how Microsoft is addressing the specific problems customers are using Azure Stack for.

Microsoft’s CEO explains why his company sued the U.S. government

Microsoft surprised the world last month when it filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice, alleging that the frequent practice of attaching gag orders to search warrants for customer data violates the U.S. Constitution.

On Monday, CEO Satya Nadella told a group of tech luminaries why the company did so: Microsoft has a strong view on its privacy promises to users, and the company will fight to prevent government overreach that, in its view, compromises the principles of privacy. 

Governments have a compelling need to help preserve public safety, but Microsoft wants to make sure that users’ privacy is also preserved, Nadella said.

Microsoft”s Cloud Business Slows–Update

The slowing growth in cloud computing coupled with the earnings miss spooked investors. Shares traded after hours fell about 5.5% to $ 52.70.
