3. Get 30 minutes of quiet every morning.
“I set two alarms every morning. The first one isn’t to create a window of time to snooze, but to allow me 30 minutes of quiet time every morning. It’s the calm before the action. During this time I tackle my confidence level and insecurities. I meditate, pray or give myself a pep talk. I take a moment to be mentally aware of the thoughts in my mind that could potentially hold me back from my accomplishments for the day, and I work on tucking them far away. By the time the next alarm goes off, I usually feel less fragmented and very centered. Thirty minutes later the second alarm goes off, usually playing a song–a positive, upbeat song which signals that it’s go time! Time to conquer the day!”

4. Work out, then focus on family and work.
“I wake up by 5 a.m. to work out with a trainer before my boys wake up. Working out reduces stress and makes me a better mom and boss. I also find it’s important to make time for a one-hour clarity break during my work day to focus on the business.”

5. Set goals the night before.
“Every evening, I spend a few minutes planning my goals for the following day. More than just a to-do list, I think about what I accomplished that day and what I need to get accomplished in the next few days. I then write out, by hand, all the people, processes and programs in which I want to invest time improving in the following day. The list doesn’t always get accomplished the next day, as a good leader needs to be flexible, but by committing them to paper, I’m able to prioritize my time and my goals.”

6. Unplug and work out first thing.
“I like to start my mornings at the gym. It is helpful for me to get up, be active and disconnect first thing when I wake up. 7. Take the time to be personal.
“I start my day early, which means I’ll usually catch one or two employees before the work day technically ever starts. They’ll usually come in my office and we will talk about work, but it quickly turns into conversations about what’s going on in their lives and things much bigger than work. I really enjoy those talks and I think having a pulse on people’s personal lives helps me be a better boss, too. One habit I’ve gotten into and really held myself to is making rounds to say hi to everyone every morning. It’s a small gesture, but I think everyone enjoys the engagement and I want to feel as accessible as possible.

8. Determine your workday rhythm.
“I get my best work done in the morning. After my husband Ted takes our boys to school or camp, I sit at my desk with a large mug of coffee and don’t stop working until 1 p.m. I keep meetings, calls, errands for afternoons, when my brain is less focused. And of course, evenings are family time, dinner with friends and oft-needed rest. Determining a workday rhythm that gives energy (vs. depletes energy) is a worthwhile exercise for everyone.”

9. Utilize your calendar as a daily to-do list.
“I prefer to use my calendar as my to-do list. I not only have my conference calls and meetings on my calendar but I also put three to five of my top items on the calendar each day that I want and need to get done. I also schedule some sort of workout or yoga class because it’s a necessity for my mental wellbeing and keeps me performing at the top of my game. Each evening I look back at my calendar for the day and feel very accomplished. This technique helps me keep moving forward throughout the day otherwise I’d get bogged down with mini fires and items that keep me in the weeds.”

10. Build relationships with colleagues.

11. Stop overthinking it.

16. Take time for silence each morning.

17. Write down all the good and bad every day.

19. Take care of yourself.

By late January, most of us have abandoned our New Year’s resolutions. It’s a statistical fact. Resolutions can get a bad rap. The problem isn’t making resolutions, but rather the resolutions we make. They require too much growth and, often, too much pressure for us to handle in a short period of time.
It’s like signing up for a marathon before you even learned how to jog.
In making my own resolutions (yes, I did, too), I have leaned on a great quote from Tony Robbins’s documentary I Am Not Your Guru:

Sound familiar? Here is why it resonates.
Focus on the long game
Concentrating on long-term growth has two immediate benefits: It emphasizes strategy and it gives flexibility.
If you resolve to become a healthier weight in the next 30 days, then your mind will automatically start looking for the hack: What is the latest diet trend? How can I lose as much as possible as quickly as possible?
By stretching out your goal to, say, a three or five year plan, then you’re focusing on methods that are sustainable rather than quick.
The other benefit is that you are much gentler on yourself in the process, making it much more likely that you will actually reach your goal. Going after a goal is much like the stock market: It never moves in a straight line but, through the ups and downs, it almost always ends higher than where it started. Obsessing on short-term gains is akin to being a modern-day Bitcoin investor. The dramatic emotional toll may outweigh any real gains.
Balance the short and the long
One good method is to set your long-range goal, then work backwards to figure out what increments you need to hit at what time. The increments create the milestones and those become the metrics that you measure.

Motorola unveiled the next generation of its Moto 360 smartwatch line today, and much to the frustration of Android fans, the gadget’s screen still doesn’t fill the face of an otherwise perfectly round watch.
That gap, loving called a “shelf” by Motorola, and angrily called a “flat tire” by some consumers, existed in the first generation Moto 360 and will live on in the second — though Motorola tells us it would like to get rid of it, eventually.
During a pre-launch press event yesterday, we asked Jim Wicks, a Motorola executive leading consumer design, about the flaw, to which he called it “the right decision.”
VentureBeat: How do you react to criticism of the shelf? Through the leaks, people have reacted negatively about what you’re calling the shelf at the bottom of the watch.
Jim Wicks: We could move the shelf out. You’d have a round display and you’d have a thicker bezel or a bigger watch, and we don’t want to do that. We could have done that in the first one and we chose not to. Um, so we really think this 46mm diameter and the 42mm are really important. That shelf, what it’s doing, is it’s hiding some really important sensors — the proximity sensor and other sensors — it’s also where we fold over the display, the display drivers, and by doing that we can keep a very simple, very thin bezel.
…You see some designs that are rectangular, or have some metal coming out, that are really to cover that. We didn’t do that for the reasons I said. We wanted to have the best fit. The most display for the body … So we look at all of that, we decided that having the shelf was the best design decision.
VentureBeat: Is the goal to have both though?
Wicks: Overtime, it would be great, yeah. But we don’t want to sacrifice the fit. ..It’s kind of nice, when you’re scrolling down to have the hard edge there, but it’s really those other factors that drove it.
That’s why we did it. We own that. We believe it’s the right decision.
Wicks’ argument isn’t bad, but it reads like a rationalization of the 360 development team’s limitations. LG’s G Watch is round and doesn’t feature this design flaw (though its bezel is considerably thicker), and Motorola’s own marketing team — or whoever made this commercial — appears to dislike it. Ultimately Motorola aims to eliminate it, if we’re interpreting Wicks’ comment correctly, and that’s a good sign long-term.
