Virtual reality coronation takes dementia patients down memory lane
February 23, 2018 6:02 pm|Comments (0)

HINDHEAD, England (Reuters) – For 93-year-old Daphne Padfield, a dementia sufferer in an English care home, the arrival of a virtual reality (VR) headset offered a window back to the day in 1953 when Britain crowned its new queen.

“Those things don’t happen too often, so we were very privileged that day,” said Padfield, casting her mind back to the coronation.

The VR film she watched is the work of a project called The Wayback, designed to trigger memories and emotions in people with dementia and help them re-engage with relatives and carers.

The first film in a planned series saw filmmakers and a 170-strong volunteer cast recreate a street party held to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s coronation on June 2, 1953.

Users can view the film by downloading a free app onto their smartphone, which they then insert into an inexpensive virtual reality headset.

“It was born of frustration, really. I wished there’d been something around at that time that would have helped me and my family through a difficult period,” said co-creator Andy Garnett, who lost a family member who suffered from dementia.

“Using VR just seemed like a really interesting way to perhaps create a memory …and spark a bigger conversation.”

Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by strokes or diseases such as Alzheimer‘s. People with dementia can suffer from memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language.

There are over 850,000 people living with some form of dementia in Britain, with that number estimated to rise to one million by 2025, according to the Alzheimer’s Society, a charity.

At Langham Court Dementia Home in Surrey, The Wayback has been introduced for relatives and carers to use with some residents.

Sarah Chapman, a director at the home, told Reuters that the film evoked detailed recollections in those who viewed it. “It was just amazing to see them so happy,” she said.

A senior researcher at a British dementia charity welcomed VR technology as a means of helping suffers, but cautioned the technology needed to be used with care.

“For instance, some people with dementia experience what are called misperceptions,” Dr Karen Harrison-Dening, head of research and publications at Dementia UK, told Reuters via email.

“…This can lead to confusion over which images are ‘real’ or not, and may prove unsettling for the person.”

The filmmakers are planning their next work around England’s 1966 soccer World Cup victory celebrations, and also hope to expand the project to other countries.

Fitbit takes aim at Apple with new smartwatch launch
August 28, 2017 3:55 pm|Comments (0)

(Reuters) – Wearable device maker Fitbit Inc (FIT.N) on Monday launched its newest device, the Ionic smartwatch, with features ranging from fitness tracking to contactless payment, as it gears up to compete with rivals such as Apple Inc (AAPL.O).

Once the market leader in wearables, Fitbit has recently struggled due to fierce competition and had earlier blamed a shift among consumers toward feature-rich devices and smartwatches for its revenue decline.

Ionic smartwatches will feature GPS, heart rate tracking, water resistance up to 50 meters, Fitbit Pay, on-board music, multiple clock faces and a battery that will last more than 4 days, the company said in a statement.

“Over the coming months you will be able to add eligible American Express cards, as well as Mastercard and Visa credit and debit cards from top issuing banks in over 10 markets across the globe,” Fitbit said.

The watch also has a new sensor technology — relative SpO2 sensor — for estimating oxygen levels in the blood that have the potential to track sleep apnea among others.

With a price tag of $ 299.95, Ionic is priced above Apple Watch’s starting price of $ 269.

“Fitbit can take some market share from Apple by appealing to those who are more focused on fitness, however, we do not expect this to be a significant share of Apple’s overall smartwatch sales,” Wedbush Securities analyst Alicia Reese said.

Ionic will be available for pre-sale from Monday on Fitbit’s website and at some online retailers from Tuesday, the company said in a statement.

The company on Monday also launched Aria 2 smart scale and Flyer wireless headphones.

Shares of Fitbit – known for its colorful wristbands that monitor heartrate, track sleeping patterns, count steps and calories – were up 5.9 percent at $ 6.07 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Review: Tableau takes self-service BI to new heights
May 12, 2017 12:20 pm|Comments (0)

Since I reviewed Tableau, Qlik Sense, and Microsoft Power BI in 2015, Tableau and Microsoft have solidified their leadership in the business intelligence (BI) market: Tableau with intuitive interactive exploration, Microsoft with low price and Office integration. Qlik is still a leader compared to the other 20 vendors in the sector, but trails both Tableau and Power BI.

Spotify takes a cue from Tidal with hi-fi streaming option
March 7, 2017 8:05 am|Comments (0)

Facebook copies Snapchat, and Spotify copies Tidal.

The top music streaming service is planning to introduce lossless audio — or CD-quality music — to subscribers for a higher monthly price, according to a report in The Verge

That report was based on a Spotify user source who got the option to sign up in what looked like a test of potential pricing, and some Reddit users who did, too. A Spotify spokesperson told the publication that “We are always testing new products and offers but have no news to share at this time.” Spotify gave the same statement to Mashable

The pricing test offered users an upgrade to high-quality audio for between $ 5 and $ 10 more per month than the usual $ 10-a-month Spotify Premium. That would be $ 15 to $ 20 a month total for lossless audio Spotify subscribers. Read more…

Justin Bieber Takes A Few Punches For Complex

‘I feel like it’s my responsibility to be the greatest I can be,’ he says in the magazine’s April/May issue.

Justin Bieber appears bloodied and beat up on the cover of Complex magazine, and it’s a far cry from the Biebs’ well-groomed image.

Inside the April/May issue, the 18-year-old opens up about his childhood and his very public relationship with girlfriend Selena Gomez. He also discusses his upcoming album, Believe, pledging that it’s “go big or go home” once it drops later this year.

”I feel like it’s my responsibility to be the greatest I can be,” the magazine cover boy says. “If I start making terrible music, I don’t expect people to like me. If I’m making great music and there’s no reason for people to dislike me, that’s when it’s going to make me upset. People just need to take a chance and listen. If they don’t want to take a chance, then I don’t know. That’s going to be the biggest problem: to make them feel like it’s cool for them to like my music.”

Bieber hopes the new album will show his growth. Sennheiser Takes the Long View When it Comes to Superior Sound
December 13, 2016 12:10 pm|Comments (0)

Sennheiser has been at the apogee of the audio business for decades. When I was growing up, a pair of Sennheiser headphones was the aspiration of any knowledgeable audiophile. I recently had a chance to sit down with brothers Andreas and Daniel Sennheiser. They are the company’s co-CEOs; their grandfather founded the company 72 years ago.
